The library at Cardiff Castle. It occupies the site of the medieval great hall and was designed by William Burges in the 1870s for then-owner John Crichton-Stuart, 3rd Marquess of Bute. The room is known for its beautiful, intricate and sometimes humorous carvings. The chimneypiece has carved figures representing the ancient languages; Greek,
Assyrian, Hebrew, Egyptian and Celtic, in homage to the Marquess, who was a noted linguist and polymath.
