Arwa al-Sulayhi was a long reigning Queen of Yemen. She was first a co-ruler with her first two husbands, and then in her own right after their deaths. She was the sole Queen of Yemen from 1067 until her death in 1138. She was the first woman to have a title of hujja, a prestigious title in Isma’ili Shia Islam, which also showed her devotion to God. Arwa was referred to as al-Malika al-Hurra, which is Arabic for “The Noble Queen”, which reflected her personality and her reign as Queen of Yemen. She is known for for being of the few female Arab-Muslim monarchs to have khutbahs (a form of Islamic teachings), and also found several mosques, one of them being the Queen Arwa Mosque. Besides being a devout servant to God, she was known for her intelligence, poetry, stories, and her extreme beauty. She was also very educated in the Qur’an and hadiths. Queen Arwa’s reign was prosperous for she helped agriculture in the kingdom, expanded cities and roads in Samarra, and help boost the economy. Arwa contributed by building many mosques in Yemen, and palaces to help increase the city’s wealth and culture. To this day her legacy still lives on in Yemen as Queen Arwa University is named after her. When Arwa died in 1138, she was laid to rest in the Queen Arwa Mosque.
